Transforming this old apartment by the harbourfront park in Rushcutters Bay, we sought to establish an environment of casual, classic elegance and quiet luxury. Working with the canvas of greens and blues outside, the interior design features a neutral palette and quality natural materials that embrace the light and calm surroundings. Inspiration has been drawn from the curves of Art Deco design, the forms of mid-century Italian furniture and the sophisticated parquetry floors of Parisian apartments, yet the mix of materials, tones and relaxed lines has created a space that is warm, inviting and uniquely Australian.

One of the most impressive introductions of curves in the interior design is the leather banquette, which we created by utilising the irregular shape of the apartment. Stylish yet cosy, it not only creates a sense of warmth and comfort but is also highly practical, sitting several people with ease. The leather itself, in an inviting tan hue, will patina beautifully over time, adding to the longevity and timeless appeal of the design.

The reorientation and redesign of the kitchen has been a masterstroke. More than merely a functional zone, its beautiful lines and finishes mean the kitchen is better integrated with the adjacent spaces, making it a seamless part of the open-plan living area. The kitchen also takes up less space than it did before, allowing the whole living area to appear more generous and welcoming.

The neutral palette celebrates the natural beauty of the materials themselves — from the tan leather to the reflective Venetian plaster and brass accents — while the polished plaster and wall lights create a rippling light effect, mirroring the water outside. The result is a tranquil sanctuary in perfect harmony with the park and harbour beyond.
